A gift of grants

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club honored 2022 Rotary Foundation grant recipients at its weekly meeting Friday.

More than $31,000 was gifted to support about 20 local nonprofit organizations.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” Rotary President Claudia Brennan said.

Rotary members Emily Moses and Sam Hunter worked in tandem to announce the recipients. Moses shared how right now, nonprofits are feeling the pinch of inflation and higher housing costs, perhaps more than most.

“The most amazing and fun part of the club is our amazing nonprofits,” Moses said. “People don’t realize that nonprofits are often operating on a margin of $100. The money we give makes a real impact.”

Rotary members volunteer with the organizations their club supports, Moses said. The personal connections made through volunteerism make the gifting of grants much more personal, she said.

St. Vincent de Paul North Idaho case managers Annie Parker and Kendra Wininger were present to accept a $1,200 grant that will help support the Trinity Group Home and Angel Arms programs.

The Trinity program serves those living with a mental health diagnosis. Trinity consists of seven group homes and 16 studio apartments. Residents receive life skills training and help to advance their educations. Some stay in the program for many years, while others leave after a year of participation.

“We work with those that have persistent mental health issues to get them to independence,” Parker said.

Angel Arms supports the chronically homeless by helping them acquire permanent housing, Parker said. All residents are expected to pay rent toward their accommodations. The Rotary grant will ease some of the financial burden for those who are struggling.

Both programs are seeing much success, Parker said.

Specialized Needs Recreation plans to use its $1,500 grant to help pay for gas. The organization provides social activities and recreation for youth and adults with physical or developmental disabilities and often provides transportation for clients.
