Eberlein running for Kootenai County commissioner

Post Falls resident Marc Eberlein has announced his candidacy for Kootenai County commissioner, aiming to retake the District 1 seat he lost in 2016 to outgoing commissioner Bill Brooks.

“Government overreach is moving swiftly to compromise our American liberties,” Eberlein said in a news release. “Tax burdens are sapping Idahoans. Parental rights, gun rights, health care freedom and even life itself are at stake. County commissioners are elected to serve as watchdogs and oversee governmental activities on behalf of the taxpayers.”

Eberlein spent 18 years in the logging industry and forestry interspersed with fighting forest fires. He is a business owner, entrepreneur, inventor and patent holder.

He has lived in Post Falls for 24 years with his late wife of 45 years. He has four children and 14 grandchildren. An avid outdoorsman, he’s also a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.

A commissioner’s duties begin as soon as the person is sworn into office and the learning curve is “straight up,” Eberlein said. During his four years as a commissioner, he said he gained valuable knowledge of taxpayer and local government needs. He said he worked to uphold property rights and advocated against tax increases.

Eberlein said he believes commissioners should concentrate on public safety issues, law enforcement, essential services and lowering property taxes.

In a news release, he criticized a controversial 2022 recommendation on “optional forms of government” for Kootenai County, which commissioners chose not to put on the ballot, and a recent failed open space bond.

“Why would Kootenai County residents vote in favor of a $50 million open space bond?” he said in a news release. “We the people voted no. At what cost to taxpayers?”

As a Republican candidate for commissioner, Eberlein said he’s determined to lower taxes.

“He believes that honesty, common sense, practicality, the desire to listen and to hear, fairness and the commitment to serve are qualities we all expect of our government officials,” a news release said.
